🩵 I don't usually attempt covers.

It's a hard ask: to bring something new to a well-known script.
And if someone already did it justice, which is definitely the case in Whitney's version, it's even more daunting.

Although I've probably heard 'Wanna Dance With Somebody' hundreds of times–everyone who lived through the 80s did–I’ve never been a Whitney fan.
Nor am I someone who openly admits to wanting to be loved.
Not publicly or even in the privacy of my own mind.

But songs that need singing have a way of finding you.
And the Muse has her ways.

It started out as an intention–to record an album for my Patreon community, thanking them for their years of love and support.

And pure intentions, in a very impure world, transmute into magic.
I don't remember choosing the song or even recording the vocal.
All I know is that it is the most honest recording I have ever sung.

The absence of the 'listening self' is what I hear.
That, and Nicola Tescari, the best pianist and producer who has ever lived.

Often, when I record, the 'listener' is there - critiquing, analysing, fixing.
This well-meaning intruder muddies the purity of the recording and, quite frankly, is the reason so many artists have drink and drug dependencies–to shut out the noise so they can get on with their jobs.

I've only caught it on a few recordings - the magic.
And maybe only on a line or two.
But that's all you need.
An honest note from a human heart can't help but make you cry.

As for the song, stripped of its poptastic glory, the true emotion emerges; deep, visceral longing.
And who can't relate to wanting?
Who doesn’t want to know that they are loved?
Maybe not psychopaths (and I know at least one).
But everyone wanted to be loved and wanted,
Once upon a time.

Well all have desires that may never been fulfilled–at least I do.
Which is probably why I found my voice so easily within this composition.

As for the video, this was the last of four impromptu one shot performances filmed by David Cook while we were checking locations for another shoot. No costumes, no planning. Action.

The first one-shot walking take, we used for the 'I'm on Fire' clip.
The last, well...sometimes you just need to dance.

There is rawness to vocals that aren't recorded and re-recorded.
They’re less cerebral, less manicured and possess a certain magic that can only be captured if you stay below the three-take threshold— at least that’s my experience.

We didn't do one take on purpose — I was sick that day — but the magic is there, possibly because there was only one take.
.
The video is also an accidental one-shot wonder.
We intended to shoot another clip but it was too windy.
So, we dumped the bustle dress and pressed record.
No stylist.
No make up.
No plan.

I recorded this for my nephew during lockdown.
Everytime I'd play it on a livestream he'd fall asleep so I figured it was worth recording, just so she'd be able to put him to bed
In a few months I'll be putting out a covers album. This is one of the tracks on it. Thank God the recording has a much better piano part than this ome : )
