This week in 1979, Carly Simon's "Vengeance" peaked at No. 48 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending seven weeks on the chart. Released as the lead single from SPY, the song found Carly embracing a harder-edged rock sound under producer Arif Mardin, with a powerhouse band that included Steve Gadd, Tony Levin, David Sanborn, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, and Tim Curry on backing vocals.



The song also earned Carly a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female, the first year that category was presented. A few years later, its music video became part of television history when it was among the earliest videos broadcast during MTV's very first day on the air in August 1981, making Carly only the second female solo artist to appear on the new network.



Nearly five decades later, Carly's latest single, "Howl," explores some of that same emotional territory from a very different perspective. Where "Vengeance" gives voice to anger and confrontation, "Howl" begins there, but ultimately finds its way to forgiveness, another chapter in Carly's lifelong exploration of the complexities of the human heart.

Carly's “Let the River Run” has been newly upscaled and is now available in HD on her official YouTube channel.

Written & performed by Carly for the film "Working Girl," the song became one of the defining anthems of its era - and made history along the way. It earned Carly the Academy Award for Best Original Song, along with a Golden Globe and a Grammy, making her the first artist to win all three major awards for a song she wrote, performed, and recorded herself.

Upon its release, the song reached #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #11 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and has remained one of Carly’s most powerful and enduring recordings.
