I saw my first black president, made me so proud I cried

I hear people singing far away through the fog
I see sparks in the wasteland, feel the strength in the underdog
It’s been a long time coming, our tongues too long tied
They tried to freeze the water, but they could not stop the tide

They organized the music they thought would make us dance
The USA they sold us was a lot like Vichy France
We did not feel the barbed wire they strung up until we felt
The haunted presence in our dreams of Franklin Roosevelt

Nevermore will the fist of tyrants rule us from above
Or make us love the things we hate and hate the things we love
Their time is passing quickly I hear the breaking of the chains
There’s nothing like a clear blue sky after a night of heavy rain

Everywhere seeds are bursting where they were long concealed
The paralyzed are standing fearless marching through the fields
The mountains of corruption are crumbling stone by stone
By a million hands that understand together they’re not alone

Nevermore will the fist of tyrants rule us from above

And hides his pain by acting proud
He drinks too much and he laughs too loud

Of a soldiers life inside a trench
Of the look of death and the ghastly stench

A decent grave to surround them

And nothing lasts forever
Oh I'd pray for him but I've forgotten how

There's always another with the same funny bow
