From fear to calm surrender
Recently I visited Bakersfield Rescue to meet Lulu, a pitbull in need of rehabilitation. Here is a demonstration of how patience and calm confidence go a long way to safely put a leash on a fearful dog and begin rehabilitation.
The moment she stops fighting the leash and chooses to follow, everything changes. That is calm surrender, and it is where the work begins.

Del miedo a la rendición en calma
Hace poco visité Bakersfield Rescue para conocer a Lulu, una Pit Bull que necesitaba rehabilitación. En este video enseño cómo la paciencia, la calma y la seguridad son fundamentales para ponerle la correa a un perro con miedo sin ponerlo en riesgo y empezar su rehabilitación.
En el momento en que Lulu deja de resistirse a la correa y decide seguirme, todo cambia. Eso es rendición en calma, y ahí es donde comienza el verdadero trabajo.

What Is This Dog Saying?
In this video of Dog Nation, what is this dog saying? Is it back off, let's play, or I'm not sure? Take your guess before the answer.
What he's saying is, I am not sure. Growling is communication. He is telling us, I can growl, and you can give me distance, so I can be a dog. The pack gives him distance, we give him distance, and he starts to feel more comfortable. Then I get a little tail wag.

Why Dogs Get Obsessed
In this video of Dog Nation, I meet Buddha, a Rottweiler with a garden hose obsession. Every time his pet parent turns on the hose or the sprinkler, he attacks the water and goes crazy for it.
When a dog doesn't have a limit, they develop obsession. People say "my dog is fixated" on the ball, the water or food. Once the mind is already in a fixated state, it takes a while to bring it back, so the limit has to come first.
I put Buddha on the leash and set him up to understand one thing: don't chase the water right now. Then his pet parent takes the leash, relaxes, gives her direction, and enjoys being listened to. If you want that behavior, you repeat it, and then it stays permanent.

En este video de Dog Nation, conozco a Buddha, un Rottweiler obsesionado con la manguera del jardín. Cada vez que su humana abre la llave del agua o enciende los aspersores, Buddha se lanza contra el agua y pierde el control.
Cuando un perro no tiene límites, puede desarrollar obsesiones. La gente dice: “Mi perro está obsesionado con la pelota, el agua o la comida”. Una vez que su mente entra en ese estado de obsesión, toma tiempo lograr que vuelva a la calma. Por eso es importante establecer límites desde el principio.
Le pongo la correa a Buddha y le enseño algo muy sencillo: en este momento no debe perseguir el agua. Después, su humana toma la correa, se relaja, le indica qué hacer y disfruta ver cómo Buddha le hace caso. Si quieres mantener ese comportamiento, tienes que practicarlo constantemente hasta que se convierta en un hábito permanente.
