Eric Bibb - Better Times Will Come
Eric Bibb does a singular version of this universal song for the Better Times Project! From Janis: I can’t remember the first time I met Eric; I do know that my parents were huge fans of Leon Bibb, Eric’s father, so it was a double joy when we all three met up at the Vancouver Folk Festival years ago. I had a wonderful time at the Bluebird Cafe with Eric and Danny Flowers, but hadn’t been in touch much since he moved to Sweden. Still, when I asked for help, he and his wife Ulrika came running – or rather, recording. At the end of his video, he says some lovely things about the song and my work. It literally brought me to tears.
About that banjo, from Eric himself: “I’ve played it on an old Vega six-string banjo, which I bought years ago at Umanov’s down on Bleecker street. Mattie told me it might have once belonged to Rev. Davis, who used to borrow Janis' big Martin, I’m told.” (And yes, Rev. Gary Davis did indeed love to play on Janis' big Martin D-18.)

Memphis - Janis Ian & Willie Nelson
I wrote this song with Deana Carter for my album "god & the fbi". Everyone said Willie would never record it with me, but we persisted and sure enough, one day the invitation came - come on down to Perdenales and record it in his studio! Chet Atkins played lead, we sang, and it was an unbelievably wonderful experience.
This video was made by Dave, a fan I wish I knew more about, because it's stunning!

Emmanuel - Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, Deana Carter
From Janis: My co-writer Kye and I were sitting around one day, trying to decide what to work on, and I said "Hey, I've never written a round! Let's write one." Kye replied that it wasn't possible, and I said "What, all the rounds we know are songs that mysteriously and magically become rounds?" She went on to do something else and I sat down and sketched out this melody, bringing it back to her about 15 minutes later and saying "This is a round. I promise it'll work."
Then we dealt with the problem of a Jew and a Christian trying to write a holiday song that wasn't denomination-specific, which was neatly solved by Kye suggesting we concentrate on "Emmanuel".
About a month later, Brooks Arthur (who'd engineered "Society's Child", produced and engineered Between the Lines, Stars, Aftertones, including "At 17") was going to be in town. We'd been looking for a project we could do together, and here it was, ready-made. I called Kathy Mattea, who'd been my first friend in Nashville, and Deanna Carter, who'd just finished writing "Memphis" with me (later recorded with Willie Nelson), and asked if they'd sing it with me. Then I enlisted Randy Leago to play percussion. We dropped into a local studio, Brooks engineered and produced, and here it is for your holiday enjoyment, complete with photos from all over the world - including my living room and old back yard!

The Light At The End Of The Line
The Light At The End Of The Line
A film by Peter Cunningham
Lyric:
(Janis Ian)
It’s the end of the line
and I know it’s been rough
Oh, but time after time,
it was always enough
You were there when I laughed
You were there when I cried
You are there as I tell you “Good-bye”
It’s the end of the line
and whatever they say,
I was yours, you were mine
Just a heartbeat away
Close enough to be kissed
Far enough to be missed
From the cradle to silver and grey
In due time, there will be
someone else who will see
all the good in your heart,
even though we’re apart
Oh, how I’ve loved your heart
In the blink of an eye,
all that’s left is the past
and the memories fade
‘til there’s silence, at last
But the song will remember
The spark will still shine
It’s the light at the end of the line
There’s a light at the end of the line
THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE LINE
It's the end of the line, and I know it's been rough
Oh but time after time, it was always enough
You were there when I laughed, you were there when I cried
You are there as I tell you goodbye
It's the end of the line, and whatever they say
I was yours, you were mine - just a heartbeat away
Close enough to be kissed, far enough to be missed
From the cradle to silver and gray
In due time there will be someone else who will see
all the good in your heart, even though we're apart
Oh, how I loved your heart
In the blink of an eye, all that's left is the past
and the memories fade 'til there's silence at last
but the song still remembers, the spark will still shine
