Patrick Wolf / The Laughing Dove / Official Music Video
The Laughing Dove
music
written, produced and engineered by Patrick Wolf
Kantalyre, Pitch Pipe, Vocals and Upright Piano by Patrick Wolf
Mastered by Katie Tavini
words
Be still let the desert speak
The tropic of cancer from my beak
Here you come searching for enlightenment
Like some entitlement, refund or career
“No one is as cruel as I am to myself
Who’s to blame, and why?”
You scorn to yourself
As these sands shift and shelf
Staring at me with that plank in your eye
The weight of the world
Not yours to shoulder
No boulder to roll
SoNo hill to shoulder
Change is but a choice
Of grace or violence
No need to swim the lake of fire
To reach the firmament
The sword cuts both ways
Not for you gripping to that blade
Til martyr blue
Go tell that to him
Who will wrestle the wind
Just to have suffering as revenue
There is a snake with it’s tail
In it’s own mouth and without fail
It’s teeth sink into it’s own ending
The circle starts mending
Only as it breaks
The weight of the world
Not yours to shoulder
No boulder to roll
No hill to shoulder
Change is but a choice
Of grace or violence
No need to swim the lake of fire
To see the firmament
And Before the light prisms
Down in the yardang and dune
Your failures could be forgiven
Why can’t you allow them to
Oh, go…
There’s a storm of sand gathering
Out on the bedouin silence
If you still want vanishing
So spoke the laughing dove
From a branch in the harmattan dust
Yes, no one is as cruel as I am to I
I know why, but I’m too kind to say -

Lyrics
I was the prince of the rose
Where the supernature grows
‘Til the rogue kingdom come
And the garden bulldozed
Said the damsel to distress :
“I refuse to wear your dress
Nor afford you ten years sleep
Nor in you turret can me keep
I’ve been so long worrying
What I was doing wrong
I forgot my rights
You banished me
To the border
Then you hate
What I became to survive
No table at the feast
But my place is certain
You can not spare me the peace
So I become the beast”
I am the witch in your wall
So mote it be your castle fall
As I return stone by stone
Your humiliation ritual
Said the jester to the king
“Your boots I’m no longer licking
Tonight I reclaim my tongue
I am not your weapon
I’ve been so long worrying
What I was doing wrong
I forgot my rights
You banished me
To the border
Then you hate
What I became to survive
No table at the feast
But my place is certain
You can not spare me the peace
So I become the beast”
I don’t owe you an explanation
Of the nature of the beast that I’ve become
But I’m not the only one
Yes it’s all the rage
All the rage
And we become

words :
The Last of England
Billy came home from the war
To Appledore
Drifting in the carpark
Of the second church
To be sold since spring
And in his redlining
Is a wing
A feather to his throttle
God, the absent father
Who stopped calling
I got bored to madness
That June
Spitting at the sun
Hollowing the moon
And then we were
The last Of England
Rotten to the core
When came a fireblight alleluia
Ripped us shore to shore
And what we lost that year
Came clear in the emigration
Of who’s conscription
Not called out
In the sound mirror
But i was cruising Gawain
In the mist
There as we kissed
Up against the pendle hill oak
The green king
Deep in doggerland woke
"I got born into this sadness just like you"
Cried the white horse of the sun
To the inverted moon
And then were
The last Of England
Rotten to the core
When came a fireblight Alleluia
Ripped us shore to shore
And by mabon
Were you dancing the broom
By the light of the burning pier
Or were you gone, to the last
Rotten to the core? -
PATRICK WOLF / JUPITER - 3/3 / 'JULIAN'
The third archetype of Jupiter is a portrait of 'Julian" named after the male alter-ego of the writer and gardener Vita Sackville-West, often she would transform to become Julian to check into hotels with her lover Violet, or proudly walk down the streets unassumingly together in the early 20th Century, Vita and her Julian are an integral part of the Crying the Neck album, not only is she a Kentish heroine for me and the album being my Kentish album, but at the end of "Better or Worse" you'll hear a reading I found of her reciting "The Land", a book which explores the wheels of the year as I have set out to do with my four album project ahead, Crying the Neck being the first of the series.
I was thinking alot about one of my favourite films "Canterbury Tale" by Powell and Pressburger, while directing and editing this film, the kentish landscape that still holds on to ring and hum for me as it does in the film in vast black and white like in that beautiful film, a journey of miracles.
for 'Julian" i have used "The Medway Mix" of Jupiter that is currently only available on CD and Vinyl at the stations of the sun tour on a companion EP I made of the album called "Poor Old Horse" which i'm sure as the months go by this year it will find it's way to digital streaming, for now, this is where you can find it, with julian in the long grass.

PATRICK WOLF / JUPITER 2/3 - 'ITHELL'
the sceond of three Crying The Neck “archetype” music videos for "Jupiter" is released here today alongside the single on all streaming platforms the next two videos will be premiered here in the run up to the release of Crying the Neck
This Jupiter archetype is named after the writer and artist Ithell Colquhoun, who attached her occult, sublime, daring and grotesque tenderness to the year alopecia shed my black stained mourning hair, first taking my eyebrows in shock of withdrawal from alcohol. Ithell making the black rocks bleed, realizing mid ritual she has set into motion a very wrong and persistent magic
lyrics
no straw to gold
round parts like these here
a burnt out bus sticks up
sundial in the wier
losing a game
we were not playing
gone to seed
twisting in the wind
autumn to autumn
they slowly
dissapear
abandoning a boat
that got too hard to steer
losing a game they were
not playing
gone to seed
twisting in the wind
but on the darkest night
i see most clear
the way to awnywhere
but here
i’m blinded
to the big picture
just before morning
jupiter
the circus used to stop by
in the banner years
nothing sacred
left to sober
the sightseer here
i’m losing a game
I was not playing
gone to seed
twisting in the widn
but on the darkest night
i see most clear
the way to anywhere
but here
when i’m blinded
to the big picture
then just before morning
jupiter
surely it can't
get any worse?
90 days on this earth
the healing begins
with admitting
i hear, so
just before morning
clear

PATRICK WOLF / JUPITER 1/3 - ‘PETER’
the first of three Crying The Neck “archetype” music videos for "Jupiter" is released here today alongside the single on all streaming platforms the second, third and fourth video of which will be released in the run up to crying the neck
This first video is named “Peter” after the artist Peter Berlin who I kept a self-portrait of in my Crying the Neck notebook taken in the 1970s out in a late summer field, it possessed an exact mid-summer melancholy and forlorn nature-erotic or nature-sensuality that I had immediately recognised in the main thread I was using in my album as I finished writing it. This first video is my self portrait of the present tense at the beginning of my fifth summer sober and clean, out in the marshlands near my house I spend my summers reading and writing in.
Crying The Neck will be released on June 13th
available to pre-order and pre-save now
