Steller Sea Lion Mob
From Paul Nicklen's Instagram (instagram.com/paulnicklen)
It is our obligation to preserve our wildlife and keep our planet wild. In the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, thousands of Steller Sea Lions migrate to the Salish Sea to feed on spawning herring. Two weeks ago, I dove with approximately 50 of these exuberant animals, who mobbed me and playfully started to bite me and my gear. It is always a pleasure being able to dive with an animal who is just as enthusiastically curious and intimately engaging. My and SeaLegacy's ultimate goal is to ensure conservation impact so that we can continue to celebrate our incredible wildlife for generations to come. #ShotOnRed @RedDigitalCinema -
National Geographic Adventurers of the Year
Yesterday National Geographic announced that my partner, Cristina Mittermeier and I are Top Explorers of the Year. It is a tremendous honor: for the past 25 years, Cristina and I have followed our hearts and tirelessly traveled to places where we can lend their voice to the issues and projects we believe in. We want to celebrate the beauty of our planet and continue to break down the walls of apathy to promote change. We encourage you all to follow your heart and find purpose in your journeys. On behalf of Cristina Mittermeier and myself, we thank you for supporting our adventures. Please follow us on social media at @crisitnamittermeier, @paulnicklen, and @sea_legacy to continue engaging with our stories. -
Majestic Orcas in Norwegian Fjords
Killer whales are much more appropriately referred to as orcas and are not whales at all. In fact, they are the largest member of the dolphin family. Did you know that there has never been a recorded case of an orca killing a person in the wild and yet they are one of the most feared animals on this planet? We must change our perceptions of these beautiful, highly intelligent, gentle and vulnerable species. I can tell you from personal experience that a moment like this can change your life. When a giant male orca decides to approach within three feet, something inside of you changes. Not only do you feel deep humility and gratitude but you also become incredibly connected to that animal and ecosystem. For those of you who expressed your desire to see the orcas of Norway protected from oil exploration, I thank you every day. I am so excited that SeaLegacy is going back this November to continue with this vital campaign.
