Peggy Lee ~ That Old Black Magic
🎶 Those icy fingers up and down my spine 💫
Johnny Mercer said the spark for "That Old Black Magic" came from a Cole Porter song. Infusing it with his signature Savannah spirit, he and Harold Arlen concocted a lyrical incantation of love for the 1942 film Star-Spangled Rhythm. It hit No. 1 for Glenn Miller the next year.
A decade later, Peggy Lee fell under its spell, taking the tune ‘round and ‘round episode after episode of her radio show. In 1955, the same year Sammy Davis Jr. made it a high-octane showpiece, she went into the studio to record her own bewitching vocal dance across the Latin rhythms of an intimate West Coast jazz band.
Too Marvelous for Words, newly restored from the original transcription discs and remastered by producer James Sáez, is streaming on all digital platforms.

Peggy Lee ~ Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive (Live, 1957)
🎶 Don't need to go to music school / All you have to do is keep lookin' cool 💫
On October 4, 1944, Johnny Mercer recorded "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" for Capitol Records, the label he'd co-founded two years earlier. Among the artists who found a home there was a young singer he'd come to mentor as a songwriter: Peggy Lee, who would go on to become one of Capitol's longest-tenured female artists.
On March 31, 1957, NBC's The Steve Allen Show brought them back together to re-create the sermon that inspired the song, with Tennessee Ernie Ford, Steve Allen, and a congregation that included the Collins Kids.
Performers: Peggy Lee
Song: "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" (Accentuate the Positive), music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Johnny Mercer

Peggy Lee ~ Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Tread) [1955 Radio Transcription]
Tin Pan Alley — Spring 1940
Johnny "America's Number One Songwriter" Mercer was called in to add a lyric to a four-year-old melody first heard at the Chez Paree in Chicago — back when Peggy Lee was still in high school. The tune belonged to Rube Bloom, a native New Yorker who'd made a name for himself leading an all-star pickup group he called The Bayou Boys — Manny Klein on trumpet, Tommy Dorsey on trombone, and on clarinet, Benny Goodman.
Johnny came up with the title for the song in signature Mercer style, borrowing a line from satirist Alexander Pope. Peggy Lee never made a formal studio recording of "Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Tread)," but a radio transcription she cut in 1955 has been remastered and re-released on the compilation Too Marvelous for Words.
Another Bloom-and-Mercer song, "Day In – Day Out," capturing the vibe of her live Manhattan nightclub sets, opens her Basin Street East albums.
