Ryūichi Sakamoto (坂本 龍一, Sakamoto Ryūichi), né le à Tokyo et mort le dans la même ville, est un musicien, compositeur, producteur de musique et acteur japonais.
Connu initialement pour avoir fait partie du groupe de musique électronique Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), il devient célèbre internationalement pour la composition de ses musiques de films, notamment celles de Furyo et du Dernier Empereur, qui lui valent respectivement un BAFTA en 1984 et un Oscar en 1988.

A celebration of an artist’s life in the purest sense, RYUICHI SAKAMOTO | OPUS is the swan song of one of the world’s greatest musicians. As a parting gift, in late 2022, Ryuichi Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave us with one final performance: a concert film featuring just him and his piano. Curated and sequenced by Sakamoto himself, the twenty pieces of his played in the film wordlessly tell the story of his life and his wide-ranging oeuvre. The selection spans his entire career, from his pop-star period with Yellow Magic Orchestra and his magnificent scores for filmmakers Bernardo Bertolucci and Nagisa Oshima to his meditative final album, “12.” Intimately filmed in black and white, and surrounded by trusted collaborators—including director Neo Sora, his son—Sakamoto bares his soul through his exquisitely haunting melodies, knowing this was the last time he would be able to present his art.

Of the album, Sakamoto says, “….after I finally ‘came home’ to my new temporary housing after a big operation, I found myself reaching for the synthesizer. I had no intention of composing something; I just wanted to be showered in sound. I’ll probably continue to keep this kind of ‘diary.’”
Ryuichi Sakamoto will release his first original album in six years, since "async" released in 2017. The album “12” is a collection of 12 songs selected from the musical sketches he recorded like a sound diary, during his two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Recorded between 2021 and 2022, the album’s twelve tracks are titled and sequenced by the dates each were written, culminating in a diary-like collection of music that provides an intimate snapshot into this period of Sakamoto’s life.
Artwork for the album was created by renowned artist Lee Ufan for whom Sakamoto has enormous respect.
