Ismael Rivera was more than a great singer—he was a master of the soneo, turning vocal improvisation into an art and making every song unmistakably his own.

Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Ismael Rivera grew up surrounded by the sounds of bomba and plena. His lifelong friendship and musical partnership with Rafael Cortijo helped bring those Afro-Puerto Rican traditions to a wider audience, with Ismael Rivera becoming the voice of Cortijo y su Combo. Together, they became a force in the early days of salsa.

From his early years with Cortijo y su Combo to his work with Los Cachimbos, Rivera built a body of music deeply rooted in Puerto Rican tradition while helping shape the sound of salsa as it emerged in the 1960s and ’70s.

Join us as we celebrate the legacy of Ismael Rivera in honor of his 95th birthday, with a special livestream featuring some of the songs that made “Maelo” one of the most beloved voices in Puerto Rican music.
