An amazing story of courage with a special twist!

Officer Corey Vanderhoof of the Key West Police Department rescued an unidentified man and his 160-pound Great Dane late at night at Hurricane Hole Marina.

Rocky fell into the dark water. His owner kept him afloat for nearly 20 minutes, calling for help. Officers arrived, and Vanderhoof immediately jumped in and swam them both to safety.

The man was writing a second book about “examples,” partially drawing on his personal relationship and divorce to explore how people’s negative actions can affect so many others. This near-death experience was one consequence.

The rescue showed the opposite: how one positive decision, supported by the department’s culture and teamwork, can touch countless lives over time.

Local media and the Miami Herald covered the story, prompting an outpouring of compassion. After letting it circulate for months on its own merits, Jean revealed his identity and offered to promote this “great example” through his worldwide outlets.

There was more to the man they saved than anyone knew. “A legend”.

Jean contacted Chief Brandenberg to honor Vanderhoof, his fellow officers, and the entire department. He also endorsed Vanderhoof for the Life Saving Award.

The honoring was organized for Smokin’ Tuna’s grand opening. The Key West venue was taken over by national concert promoter Kyle Carter, known for Mile 0, RokIsland Fest, and Rocklahoma.

Bill Hoebee, longtime friend and popular rock radio host of The Bill Hoebee Show on 95.5 Whale FM, agreed to air the honoring. The show is syndicated worldwide through the Clear Channel network.

“It’s a stellar department, one of the most organized police departments I’ve seen in quite a while.”

The honoring, praise, and letter/mission statement appear at the end. Share as you will!

Shared worldwide, this story shows how far one positive action can reach. positive action can reach.
